Working Life of Income Inadequate for UK Workers to Join Richest 10%, Report Says

Based on recent study, the median earner in the UK would have to work over five decades of income to attain the net worth of the richest 10% nationwide.

Growing Wealth Gap Across Decades

This research analyzed wealth distribution data including the Covid pandemic period and found that during 2006-08, it would have needed nearly four decades of median full-time earnings to join the top 10th of the wealth distribution.

An economic expert associated with the study commented: "Wealth gaps in Britain are presently so substantial that a typical full-time employee saving all their earnings during their working years would still not be able to reach the top of the financial hierarchy."

Assessing the Economic Gap

The study discovered that the disparity between the assets of the typical individual and someone in the richest segment was £1m in the mid-2000s, but had increased to £1.3 million in actual value by the pandemic years.

The economist continued: "These disparities are particularly worrying as economic movement in Britain is low – people that start life wealthy tend to continue being rich, and conversely applies."

Comparative Financial Divide

Despite the financial disparity expanding in actual numbers, the portion of total wealth in the UK held by the most affluent homes – known as "relative wealth inequality" – has been "largely unchanged since the eighties," according to the research.

Over this timeframe, complete net worth in the UK rose substantially from triple the gross domestic product, to approximately 7.5x.

Contributors of Financial Divide

So-called "passive" gains, by means of rising house prices and variations in superannuation evaluations, were the key contributors of the expanding economic divide from 2010 onward, per the study.

These appreciations typically went to elderly homeowners, the study demonstrates – exacerbating the intergenerational wealth divide.

Age-Based Economic Gaps

The average wealth gap between thirty-somethings and those in their early 60s more than doubled in actual value, from £135k in pre-financial crisis, to £310k.

Regional Variations

There were also stark area-based disparities, with the average level of assets in the pandemic period standing at 290 thousand pounds in south-east England, where real estate values have tended to rise rapidly, as opposed to 110 thousand pounds in the northeastern region.

Pandemic Period Impact

Amid the health crisis, when millions of workers were protected by the government-supported job retention program, and Covid shutdowns curtailed consumption options, the statistics indicate numerous families were in a position to set aside money, growing their net worth.

More affluent homes achieved superior outcomes, however. "The typical family in the bottom income bracket saw their cash reserves rise by merely £80 throughout the health crisis (across the pandemic timeframe), broadly the same as the 24 months before COVID. On the other hand, the typical family in the wealthiest fifth saw their available funds increase by £4,200," the analysis concludes.
