Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the count of new jobs created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication when the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are going up, although slowly. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
