The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
